Hey I’m Simon Whimsy,
a website designer, photographer, and adventure enthusiast from Lynnwood, WA. I’ve been climbing mountains for over 13 years since I was 12 years old. I do a combination of hiking, backpacking, scrambling, and alpine climbing. My favorite parts of web design are the user interface, making things efficient, and coming in with innovative ideas. While I’ve become a bit of a nerd over the years, I promise that I’m still fun as ever. 🙂 Later 2018 I plan on launching Mountain Wiki (owner oriented wikis with advanced content and community capabilities) as well as some overhauls to my existing project TrailTopo.
Mount Pilchuck was the first mountain I climbed during winter at sunset. It was a life changing event that brought me to where I am today. My mom and brother joined me for the first few years. As I got older I was finally allowed to meet up with non family people to go on trips. Once I turned 18 years old and graduated high school the flood gates of adventure opened up wide. I had the greatest summer of my life of nearly non stop alpine trips back to back where I built a ton of experience. Eventually I started up college and did trips here and there (summer was always the best). After learning how to lead on rock I was finally enabled to do more technical climbs and multi pitch alpine. In 2013 I further built up my climbing skills by climbing peaks like Johannesburg, Torment Forbidden Traverse, Burgundy Spire, and the Ptarmigan Traverse in a white out. In 2014 I got to go to Peru and climb Alpamayo (19,500 feet) as well as many other amazing climbs. So I can safely say that I’m an experienced mountain climber.
My passion for photography started when I was 14 years old and got to use a moderate quality digital camera for the first time. After years of practice and slowly progressing with better camera equipment I try to capture the amazing landscapes that I visit. Many of the photos posted on this website involved a big under taking in terms of physical effort to get to. From icy mountains to endless traversing of mountain rock, I try to capture the mountain world as best as I can. I’ve had to take tens of thousands of photos to understand how to properly capture the scenes that I’ve seen, this took place over the course of many years.
“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” -Christopher Johnson McCandless
